What Is AdBlue?

AdBlue is a liquid solution of urea (a component of synthetic urine) and deionised water. It is completely colourless and non-toxic. It was introduced to neutralise Nitrous Oxide emissions from diesel engines in line with Government targets. AdBlue is a simple, effective and efficient way to reduce the fuel emissions of your business vehicles.

When injected into a diesel engine’s exhaust system, AdBlue produces a chemical reaction that neutralises the harmful nitrous oxide emissions produced by diesel vehicles. This tackles air pollution by reducing exhaust emissions and enhancing air quality.

Frequently Asked Questions About AdBlue®

What Does AdBlue® Do?

AdBlue® neutralizes exhaust gases produced by diesel vehicles.

Why Does my Car/Vehicle Need AdBlue®?

Your vehicle needs AdBlue® to reduce nitrous oxide emissions. This requirement is in line with stricter emission legislation, which aims to neutralize exhaust gases from diesel engines to help the environment.

How Can I Check if my Vehicle Needs AdBlue®?

If you have a black or blue cap adjacent to your main fuel cap, then your vehicle requires AdBlue®.

How Much AdBlue® Do I Need?

The amount of AdBlue® you need will depend on the type of vehicle you have. If you are running a car, then a 10L will be sufficient for a refill. If your vehicle is a coach or a truck, you would benefit from purchasing a larger volume from an IBC or a barrel.

What Happens If I Run Out of AdBlue®?

If you run out of AdBlue®, your vehicle will go into limp mode. Most vehicles require a minimum amount to be refilled before the engine will start again.

How do I Check the AdBlue® Level in my Vehicle?

Most vehicles will display a warning sign or notification which will notify you if you are low on AdBlue®. To check the AdBlue levels manually, consult your owner’s documentation or contact the vehicle manufacturer for guidance.

How Long Can I Store AdBlue®?

AdBlue® lasts up to 18 months, if it is kept out of direct sunlight and below 25C. However, when AdBlue is stored at a higher temperature or in direct sunlight, it will expire after six months.

How Can I Keep AdBlue® Fresh?

Contaminated AdBlue® can damage your diesel vehicle’s engine system and prove ineffective at reducing exhaust fumes. Fill your vehicle’s AdBlue tank as quickly as possible to avoid contamination and keep the AdBlue container firmly closed between refills. If there is debris in your AdBlue container, dispose of the AdBlue and container and purchase a new one.

How Do I Fill My Car with AdBlue®?

Remove the cap to the AdBlue® tank, (which will be either a blue or black cap adjacent to your fuel cap), and dispense the liquid carefully into the tank from its container. Do not put AdBlue in your fuel tank, as it is not a fuel additive.

I Put AdBlue® into my Diesel Tank, What Now?

Do not start your car. You should have your fuel tank drained to avoid any lasting damage.

Can AdBlue® freeze?

AdBlue will begin to freeze at -11°C; this does not affect the product quality or strength. The liquid phase of a partially frozen solution will still be at the required concentration and may continue to be used. The remaining frozen portion may be used after allowing to thaw.
